Reasons to be Cheerful … part 2

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

I don’t know if you were around in the 70’s or remember the Doors singing “Been down so long, that it seems like up to me”   That may sound like a cold comfort, but whilst I’m sure that we still a have a few unpleasant surprises to come, for most people, most of the bad news is on the table, and globally the stock markets etc can really only go up here.  This isn’t financial advice so much as the recognition that now is the time to invest; invest your time, invest your energy, invest your creativity to dare to be hopeful!  Flowers grow on bomb sites and someone else’s bad news can be your opportunity to break through.

People need / want to save money now so they are willing to talk to new, lower cost suppliers; big businesses are suffering too and now are no longer seen as the automatic supplier of choice; there are lots empty properties and god knows interest rates are low!   Don’t listen to the council of fear….!

The song says:

“Well, I’ve been down so Goddamn long
That it looks like up to me
Well, I’ve been down so very damn long
That it looks like up to me
Yeah, why don’t one you people
C’mon and set me free “

I would suggest that no one else can “set me free”…. if it is going to be, it is down to me!

Reasons to be cheerful… part 1

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

We have been subjected to a diet of doom and gloom for nearly a year now as one after another major corporate has gone to the wall.  People have lost jobs, homes and lives.  I hear from colleagues that they are worried; and certainly the press constantly reinforces this sense of doom.

Personally, I feel very positive.  I think that we have begun to create an environment where scared cows can be slaughtered, and accepted thinking challenged.  There have been too many things accepted for far too long because “Things have always been done that way…”  and when we are hitting targets and making profits everyone supports the status quo.

If you are going to redecorate a room, you have to first stop using it, then clear it out, strip off all the old paper, paint etc and then make good.  Only then are you ready to consider redecoration.  It seems to get worse and worse and before you start the final phase, it is easy to feel a bit depressed and wonder why you ever started.

Now is a time to be brave, imaginative and creative.  You need to remember that you should build for the long term and avoid short cuts, especially when they compromise important values.  Look after your people, (by which I mean your staff, your customers and your suppliers,) avoid waste, and communicate, communicate …. communicate!

I’d be very interested to gather together some of your examples of reasons to be cheerful.

“Be of good cheer. Do not think of today’s failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You have set yourselves a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere; and you will find joy in overcoming obstacles.”    Helen Keller

“A man can believe a considerable deal of rubbish, and yet go about his daily work in a rational and cheerful manner”    George Norman Douglas

International Wellbeing Survey – Results

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

MTV conducted a survey of 5,200 young people between 8-34 in fourteen countries to explore their sense of wellbeing  and how they see the future.  The UK came 6th, behind India, Sweden, USA, Denmark & France.  One of their key finding was that the people in the developing world were more optimistic and less stressed about the future.

I think that this is a key finding.  If you think / feel that you are on a journey then tomorrow can always bring surprises and interest.   You never know what lies around the next bend.  If however, you feel that you have arrived and you have settled, then change is likely to be a bad thing.

I have always believed that my live is a journey and I aim to make sure that I am still exploring and learning till they nail down the coffin lid!  Amidst the chaos in the world markets at present is uncertainty, but also unprecedented opportunity and challenge and the space to make a difference.

Now is the time to feel excited and do something different!

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end”  Ursula K. LeGuin

“When you have completed 95 percent of your journey, you are only halfway there.”   Japanese Proverb
