Strategies for Success in this Recession – Part 1: Change how you see things

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

The world is in global economic melt down .. right?  And yet I am sure there are many people and businesses that are doing very well in today’s marketplace.   Of course there are practical difficulties with getting credit (if you need it) or perhaps with clients who lack liquidity.  However, if we give away our power to these external factors, we inevitably cast ourselves as victims of circumstances.

It is far better to recognise these changes as the opportunity that they undoubtedly are and begin to think how we can change to take advantage of this state of flux.  In a steady state market, the big boys always win as they have the resources and the reputation.  When things become turbulent, there are opportunities for smaller, more nimble, more inventive  businesses to steal a march on them.

Martial artists train so that when they need to use their skills they don’t become paralysed by fear.  It is easy to feel scared by all that is going on, but recognising the upside of this situation helps us to move forwards, and approaching things with a positive mindset helps us be creative.

Being the same as everyone else and conforming is no longer the safe option.  Differentiate yourself: find or build a niche.  What element of the market particularly interests you or are you particularly good at?  What hasn’t been tried before or what classic ideas and techniques could be adapted today’s circumstances?  What techniques can be ported over from another area or discipline, such as what could a boat builder teach a house builder?  What ideas could be transferred from one part of the world to another one?  What is traditional in one place is innovative in another.

So Step One is to change how you look at things….

Steps Two & Three will follow shortly.

“Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.”

Life is a Hall of Mirrors…?

I was talking to one my partners and we waxed philosophical.   We were discussing the behaviours of  a mutual acquaintance who was not getting what they wanted from life.  They are someone of undoubted talent and the Universe has dealt them a pretty fair hand and all that is required to be a winner, and yet they don’t seem to be able to get ahead.  Now if we were talking about poker, then we might just say they are a lousy player and should quit.  However when it comes to playing the Game of Life, we are unable to walk away.

We analysed what was going on and it seemed that the core issue was they were saying one thing and actually doing and seeking quite the opposite.  It is a little bit like listening to someone say they want to visit Scotland and keep seeing them drive south.  I’m sure that they are not alone in this, how many of us fail to achieve the things we say we wish to because, deep down, they are not what we really want?  How many people are there who say they want to serve others but actually are more interested in helping themselves, or want to meet someone but never go out, or go out every night and communicate with no one?

I have often come to the conclusion that the true nature of things ( and people) is often the mirror opposite of the surface appearance and wonder if I wouldn’t be more successful if I always inverted my choices and actions.  Somehow I have never been brave enough to to try it…

I’d be very interested to know if any of this resonates with you and what your experiences and observations are.

“If somebody thinks they’re a hedgehog, presumably you just give ’em a mirror and a few pictures of hedgehogs and tell them to sort it out for themselves.”  Douglas Adams

“In the business world, the rearview mirror is always clearer than the windshield.” Warren Buffett

“How we think shows through in how we act. Attitudes are mirrors of the mind. They reflect thinking.”  David Joseph Schwartz

If you don’t like the way the game is going, change the rules!

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Yesterday the chancellor announce a suite of new measures to change the way the economy is heading, reducing VAT rates, talking about new Income Tax bands, deferring car tax increases.  Things which were unthinkable a little while ago are now happening!  Political parties are having to quickly revisit long-held beliefs and search for the real underpinning values and separate them from mere policies.

Today maybe a good day for you to consider what is really important and what is just a way to get it.  If you aren’t enjoying the results you are getting, it is time for you to change the rules too!

“My doctrine is not a doctrine but just a vision. I have not given you any set rules, I have not given you a system.”   Buddha

“Three Rules of Work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”   Albert Einstein
