Living your pattern?

I was talking to a friend & colleague today about something that someone had said to me.  He replied that I was listening to the content rather than seeing his pattern.  That this pattern was defined by how he saw life and how he acted so that despite the fact that I had offered him help and opportunity, he was incapable of doing what was required to seize it as he believed that these kind of things didn’t happen.  This is linked to our flight/fight response, which is designed to keep us safe but often just keeps us living small.  I thought this was a very interesting thought both from the point of view of understanding people whose actions don’t add up and also in terms of reflecting how our pattern  might be driving us.

I’d be very interested to hear any examples of this that you may have or to hear if this helps you to understand things just a little better too.

Interesting thoughts came to me while reading your blog Richard:-
First thought was: If you have no patterns to live by, one is like a fish, every 7 seconds you experience a brand new world.
Second thought: Change can be scary

      because

of a pattern one is un-aware of and I think that is more scary than working on a known / old pattern.
Third thought: If you know the patterns within you, and identify which are beneficial in your day-to-day life and skip or change those that are counter-productive….But then again I realize that I might be reacting on the content instead of the flow…or is this flow an well known old pattern that I find helpfull???

  2. Cornelis,
Thanks for these thoughts. It takes a wise person to understand their own patterns and their impact and contribution. We all have patterns and they are useful, but they are two-edged tools, and being aware of this can also be helpful. I think this is why it can be very helpful in getting an outside perspective on them (which is exactly what my friend does!)
