General Election – Change Lesson no3 – All Change!

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I had always felt that we, the great British public, were pretty sick of both politics and politicians, and was not at all surprised by the result, which for me was a pronouncement of “We don’t like/ trust any of you!”  And today we stand on a brand new shore, the first peacetime coalition government in 70 yrs.

The electorate have forced their representatives to change their behaviours and ways of working.  I don’t think any of us have any idea if it will work, but we were sick and tired of ‘business as usual’.

Sometimes, a whole new model and thinking the unthinkable is called for.  The recent changes in my personal circumstances have taken me to this place and now, as a nation, we are going there too.  It maybe in your life or your business this is a very good time to consider radical change rather than just one more tweak…

General Election – Change lessons no2

There really are a number of key points businesses can learn from this process if they want to effect Change in their business.  Today, I’d like to talk about perhaps the core issue – the W.I.F.M factor.  Everyone wants to know, before they vote, What is In it For Me?”   People are guided by their perception of their own interests and who helps them and who threatens them.  Rich people are unlikely to vote for a high tax party whereas poorer ones might be appealed to by a redistribution platform.  In your business it is just the same; you have to understand how your people will perceive your ideas and make sure that they see and feel the benefits.

If the voters (or your people) don’t believe you, or don’t believe that voting will change anything, guess what?  Nobody bothers to vote.  If, like me, you live somewhere that is a ‘safe’ seat for one party, then you probably feel that your vote makes no difference, and you may not bother, unless you want to send a message to someone.

I’d like to think we are on the verge of a political breakthrough, but whether this happens or not, there is no reason you shouldn’t learn from this process and benefit.

General Election – Change Lessons

I confess to being one of the 30% who hasn’t decided; I think Labour has shown a lack of answers and leadership going into the campaign, I don’t think the Tories are up to it, and the  LibDems just are never going to be a serious alternative. I find myself thinking a ”A plague on all your houses!”  However, like it or not things are changing before our very eyes.  The TV debates are having a real impact; the online polls are providing real time feed back; the new social media are able to give voice to us, the little people.

I confess to never having voted for either Tories or Labour, but this time if I vote LibDem again it is purely a vote for change

So what does this teach me about Change?

  • That once you mobilise the grass roots the few at the top have to listen
  • That new technology must be embraced and used to serve your cause
  • That sometimes you can’t get to the right solution in one step and you have to simply back the people most likely to change the chemistry of the environment
  • To effect change you need momentum
  • Communication is the heart of Change
  • You need more than two options to do anything more than swing to & fro

Emerging…

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

I know that all of our lives have ups and downs but we seem to be on a rollercoaster ride.  In my last blog, I talked about being forced to stop.  Last week, it got even worse; I had a stupid cold and could barely keep my eyes open.  I spent a week sleeping blowing and blinking!  I began to wonder if I’d ever feel like me again.

I had a busy week planned this week and was worried that I simply couldn’t do it all.  However, with Monday’s dawn, my energy came back and I cleaned, I cooked, I entertained and I felt like me again!

I realise that this journey will have many more ups and downs for us all, but today, I feel I’m in a more stable place and if not in control, at least able to accept that the waiting too can be part of the journey, can be positive, can be part of the healing too.  Sometimes when you can do nothing, accepting that is the best thing you can do!

I embrace emerging experience.
I participate in discovery.
I am a butterfly.
I am not a butterfly collector.
I want the experience of the butterfly.
